The Ultimate Guide to Cleaning Throw Up Out of Carpet: A Step-by-Step Guide

Updated: Nov 2, 2023

No one enjoys cleaning throw up out of carpet, but sometimes it must be done. (And thanks to Murphy's Law, it usually happens at 2 in the morning.) Whether it's due to an illness, a wild party, or a pet that ate something he shouldn't have, the sight and smell of vomit can be overwhelming.

No need to panic or burn your house down! I'll teach you how to get vomit out of your carpet. Let's restore it to its former glory! Follow my steps and you don't have to worry about residual smells or yucky stains:

Step 1: Remove Solid Pieces

The first step in cleaning throw up out of carpet (after saying a swear word and covering your nose so you don't gag yourself) is to remove as much of the solid pieces as possible. Use a dull knife or spoon to lift and scrape away any large chunks of vomit. I sometimes use lots of paper towels in my hands to scoop them up. Be careful not to press down too hard and damage the carpet fibers. You don't want to imbed the vomit even further down than necessary!

Step 2: Blot the Area

Once you've removed the solid pieces (*shudder*), use a clean cloth or paper towel to blot up as much of the liquid as possible. Blotting helps to remove the vomit from the carpet fibers and prevent it from spreading. Change to a clean cloth or paper towel frequently to avoid spreading the stain.

Step 3: Mix a Cleaning Solution

To remove the vomit stain, you'll need to mix a cleaning solution. And actually, a simple solution of warm water and white vinegar works well for most carpets. The formula I use is one part white vinegar to three parts warm water. Then you will want to spray it directly on the area with a spray bottle and let it sit for 5-10 minutes.

Step 4: Scrub the Area

Once the solution has had time to penetrate the stain, use a stiff-bristled brush to scrub the area. Scrub in a circular motion to help lift the stain from the carpet fibers. Be sure to rinse the brush frequently to avoid spreading the stain. No need to make it worse!

Step 5: Blot the Area Again

After you've finished scrubbing the area, use a clean cloth or paper towel to blot up as much of the solution as possible. Be sure to change to a clean cloth or paper towel frequently to, again, avoid spreading the stain.

Step 6: Rinse the Area

Finally, rinse the area with clean water. Use a clean cloth or paper towel to blot up as much of the water as possible. Leave the area to air dry completely. If you desire, you can use a fan to speed up the drying process.

Anyone with small children or pets will need these tips in their life! Follow these steps and you'll never fear the daunting task of cleaning vomit ever again. Just remember to act quickly (don't leave it for the next day!!!) and be patient, as removing a vomit stain can be a time-consuming chore (maybe 20 minutes if you're lucky). If you're unable to remove the stain completely on your own, don't hesitate to call in a professional carpet cleaner like Floorcraft. We have the tools and expertise to get the job done right!

And hopefully, your kid can make it to the toilet next time!
